The Mill Multiply Whitestripes for Gondry

22nd September 2003 - The Mill, New York, has worked with music-promo God Michel Gondry on his latest masterpeice for the Whitestripes, The Hardest Button to Button.

Gondry shot the promo over two days using three Panasonic DX100 cameras shooting at 24p. All three cameras were kept running the entire time apart from pausing to change videotape. In order to cut and animate correctly to the beats and bars of the music, the shoot required 32 identical drum kits and 32 identical amplifiers. These had to be positioned for each shot in the video - a mammoth task for the art department. The entire promo was made up of 30 edits per second.

The video was shot on location in New York in various familiar areas of Manhattan including the Path train to New Jersey. Beck makes a special cameo appearance in the video.

Work completed at The Mill included a multitude of split screen composites, a virtual 720 degree continuous camera move and a graded look to the whole piece.

Alistair Thompson, executive producer at The Mill, New York, commented, 'The majority of the work was completed in one weekend with four flame operators working together. The team spirit was fantastic and everyone was happy to give up free time to work with someone as pioneering and creative as Michel Gondry.'
